What Is Whitespace in Web Design?

What it applies to

Every element on every page — the space between paragraphs, around buttons, between sections, inside cards, and surrounding images all contributes to the page's readability and visual quality.

Types of whitespace and how to apply them

• Macro whitespace: Large gaps between page sections — typically 80–160px of vertical padding. Creates breathing room and helps users understand where one section ends and another begins.
• Micro whitespace: Small spaces between text lines (line-height), between list items, around inline elements, and inside components (padding on buttons and cards).
• Active whitespace: Intentionally empty areas that create focus — a large margin around a pull quote, or a single headline surrounded by empty space to give it maximum visual weight.

Whitespace in practice

• Build on an 8px base spacing grid. All padding and margin values should be multiples of 8 (8, 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 96, 128px). This creates visual rhythm and consistency without arbitrary spacing decisions.
• Resist the instinct to fill empty space. When a page looks sparse, the answer is usually better content — not more elements crammed in to fill gaps.
• Premium brands use more whitespace — it signals confidence, quality, and restraint. Cluttered layouts signal low quality regardless of the content.

Define spacing values in a consistent system using Webflow's spacing controls — apply padding and margin from your defined scale only. Using arbitrary pixel values creates inconsistency that accumulates into visual noise as the site grows.
